There’s no question that our bodies and minds took quite the emotional and physical battering in 2020. Struggles with self-care came as our favorite salons shut down, lock-down restrictions meant even walks in the fresh air became a luxury, and the pandemic brought about stresses we’d never experienced before.

As we slowly put these unprecedented difficulties behind us, attention once again turns to looking after ourselves. While it may seem frivolous, self-care undoubtedly has a strong impact on the psyche; so any guilt linked to indulging in salon treatments has no place in 2021.

But what exactly will this year hold when it comes to beauty and wellness? After such a challenging 12 months, a relaxed approach appears to reign supreme, and less-is-more is a dominant trend, especially when it comes to getting glammed up. “The Spring/Summer 2021 runways and digital presentations saw models with ‘barely-there’ make-up and glowing skin,” says Nadia Rahpaima from Sisters Beauty Lounge, referring to the dewy-skin look. “We call this the post-facial effect.” As one of the region’s leading salons, this is a look that Sisters Beauty Lounge can help you perfect. Offering cutting-edge technology that pampers the complexion as an alternative to piling on the foundation, means you can allow your natural beauty to take center stage. “Invest in a good treatment, such as the Sisters Hydracool facial, It deep-cleanses the skin which reduces pores, tightens lines and gives you an instant glow that lasts for weeks. ” You won’t need to use a lot of make-up afterwards and can get away with a tinted moisturizer as your base.

The same philosophy applies to haircare as Nadia recommends opting for treatments that will keep your strands looking healthy without altering the natural texture. “While the change of weather, coupled with constant exposure to air conditioning and other environmental factors, can take its toll on your hair, avoid dry locks by incorporating weekly masque treatments into your beauty regime,” she suggests. “Try the Sisters Caviar Ritual, which includes ingredients like hyaluronic acid and caviar pearls to support the health of the entire scalp and hair shaft.”

She also has one very easy tip that everyone can follow at home. “Washing your hair daily is the worst thing you can do. The harmful chemicals in water can be damaging and, in the long term, weaken the hair fibers,” says Nadia. Her advice is to skip the morning shampoo whenever possible and recommends installing a shower filter, such as the H20 Pure Blue Filter, to remove the harsh elements of hard water.

Moving onto make-up, we can expect to see the continuation of fuller brows and statement eyes – but with a twist. “No more spending time fixing your brows every morning,” promises Nadia “The Sisters Brow Lamination is a non-invasive treatment that will tint and set your brows, instantly making your brows look thicker and fluffier and lasts up to six weeks.” As for playing up the eyes, we’ll be looking to the glittering days of Studio 54 for inspiration. The disco glow that took social media by storm last year will continue into the new year as we hope to spend more time going out-out. “Everyone wanted to get their hands on glitter, sparkles and beads,” says Nadia, citing HBO’s hit series Euphoria as the driving inspiration behind the trend. “It’s all about bedazzled eyes.”

“ WHILE IT MAY SEEM FRIVOLOUS, SELF – CARE UNDOUBTEDLY HAS A STRONG IMPACT ON THE PSYCHE, SO ANY GUILT LINKED TO INDULGING IN SALON TREATMENTS HAS NO PLACE IN 2021 ”

Another 2020 introduction that will be sticking around is the Covid-19 safety measures. Having reopened their doors shortly after lockdown restrictions were lifted last summer, Sisters has implemented a new set of guidelines in order to ensure the health and safety of both staff and clients. With no reception or queue thanks to their contactless self-check-in systems and sanitization stations, preparing for a treatment is quick and easy. All locations of the UAE-based brand are designed to keep clients feeling comfortable and relaxed when receiving treatments and services, while exuding an air of sophistication and serenity. ■
